What does playing on beat really mean? In music the beat is the basic unit of time, It’s a way that musicians count the notes being played to stay in synch with each other.

How can we break it down? In music we have single bar and double bar, single bar is the end line of a song while double bar is the complete end of the song.

Now what are we suppose to do with this two things? Especially when you are about to solo, First you need to understand dynamics (a) Crescendo (b) Soft Tone (c) Blast Tone (d) Speed Note (e) Running Note (f) Link Note (g) And also how to end notes, and many more you can find in music dynamics.

So in other to use these things you have to feel the beat of the music, this is the most important part cause if you can’t feel it you can’t get it.

                                                             Ways you can feel the beat     

How can you feel the beat? You have to do something like trying to enjoy the music, moving your body, stamping your feet, nodding your head or by dancing with the aiming of feeling the beat, when you start feeling the beat you will then understand yourself and the solo.

And also in the process of playing you really have to pick a pattern in that particular music from any sound either from the keyboard, bass, drum or the singer, and then play with that pattern. For more explanation when listening to a music something really needs to inspire you in that particular music you are playing, then pick a little out of what inspires you and add to yours to play alongside, and also make sure your music is related, that is where we say music is a communication between various instruments, and when playing you have to play slightly ahead of the main beat, it keeps your temple in the middle range and prevent it from fluctuating or sinking sand.

                                                            

 

This is a practical example of what I just explained, in the video, the drummer just made it clear that there is a single bar in the song, if you observed which everyone rested, and also a double bar which everyone ended the song too.

Now in the video the trumpeter picked a pattern.

And whose pattern was it? He picked the pattern of the drummer, he practically play his trumpet following the beat of the drummer, also he was dancing just to make sure he feel the beat himself and to keep timing, you can see the temple is slightly ahead of the beat itself.
